What is Sub-metering?

Sub-metering is the process of installing a separate utility meter for each multi-housing unit and providing each unit with an individual statement of usage.

There are many reasons to sub-meter. Two of the more important ones are conservation and fixed cost. Sub-metering is a proven method of eliminating a majority of the utility expense for your multi-family property. The most common type of sub-metering is that of water are sewer charges.

By simply installing separate water meter for each unit in your multi-family property will allow you to fix and recover your monthly water/sewer expenses. In a majority of multi-family properties a meter can be installed on the exterior of the unit which allows for direct reading of the meter. In other cases the plumbing and climate of the individual units determine the type of meter necessary.
